The UK funding agency for research and innovation (UKRI) funds centres whose goal is to provide doctoral training in specialised subjects. These centres for doctoral training or CDTs work closely with multiple departments to provide training.

The computer science department interacts with several such centres. Admissions to a CDT are made by the CDT itself. In the first year, some CDTs offer a Master’s program of study. Subsequently, students become regular PhD students in their chosen department.
